Dog Safety – Dog Collars In The Car

dog safetyMake sure you consider dog safety when choosing a collar to use on your dog when in the car. Here are some things that you need to know before putting a collar on your dog in the car.

1) Prong Collars (Pinch Collars) – These type of collars can make great training tools for some dogs however I would highly recommend not leaving them on your dog when in the car. The reason why is this. These collars get tight and cause a correction to your dog when pulled on. If your dog gets the collar caught on the fabric or seatbelt in your car they could panic and keep pulling on the collar causing further problems.

2) Martingale Collars – While I like using these to help keep the dog from slipping out of the collar and they can be set so they don't get too tight they can also be a hazard in the car. Depending on how tight you have the collar your dog could be corrected if they get the collar caught on something in the car and could panic in the process. Another thing to keep in mind is that these collars tend to be much looser when they are not tightened thereby increasing the risk of the collar getting caught on something in the car.

3) Flat Collars – These would be my preferred choice for in the car. They aren't used for correcting the dog and they are close to the dogs neck reducing the risk of the collar getting caught on something.
