It seems to have become really common for people to use paracord collars on their dog. However, I haven’t heard anyone mention the potential dangers of these types of collars. Any collar can be dangerous but I think that using paracord to make a collar can make a collar even more dangerous.
550 paracord by definition requires 550 pounds of pressure to break the paracord. By taking that kind of paracord and tying it together with multiple other strands you are taking something that is really strong to begin with and making it extremely strong.
Update **It was brought to my attention that adding more strands of paracord and tying it together doesn’t make it stronger. I researched this and what I found was that braiding cord in a specific way can make it stronger however when you knot cord it actually decreases the strength of the cord. This is good to know because in the case of a paracord collar it would mean in theory that all the knotting would make the collar weaker. Thank you to the person who pointed this out to me.**
If your dog gets his or her collar caught it could be a lot more difficult to cut off a thick paracord collar compared to a traditional collar. In addition to this there are too many accidents where dogs actually die from getting another dogs mouth caught in their collar when they are playing and having something as strong as paracord would slow down how easy it could be to get the collar off.
