Dog Care | Choosing A Dog Collar

It can be overwhelming looking at all of the dog collars available. They are however a necessary part of dog care and it is important to pick the right one to help keep your pet safe. Here are some things to think about when picking out a new dog collar.

1) Does the dog collar have any plastic buckles or clasps? If your dog pulls on the leash plastic can break which can cause your dog to become lost if your dog doesn’t have good recall. Also, if your dog is dog aggressive or reactive you don’t want to risk them getting loose due to a buckle breaking.

2) What is the color of the metal clasp? Clasps that have a silver coloring are actually coated with that coloring and the coated clasps are not as strong as the solid brass colored clasps.

3) What is the thickness of the collar? Make sure to find a collar that is a good fit for the size of dog you have. It should say on the collar what weight of dog it works well for.

4) Make sure to measure your dog’s neck so that you can get a collar that is long enough to fit your dog properly.
