Whether you are getting your first dog or your fifth you want to make sure that you are choosing the right dog. Below are some things to consider before you adopt or buy your dog.
Consider the dogs size. If you have a tiny apartment do you really want a large dog running around in a small space? If you want a lap dog choosing a dog that will end up a large dog would not be a good fit.
How active are you? Different dogs have different exercise needs. If you don’t go for frequent and long walks it is not a good idea to get a high energy dog. Picking the right energy dog for you from the beginning helps to prevent behavior problems down the line that can be caused by lack of exercise.
What do you want your dogs personality to be like? Although every dog is an individual and will differ in personality make sure to research different breeds and choose one that has the characteristics that are what you are looking for.
Do you work from home or are you gone during the day? Some breeds are known to be velcro dogs while others are more independent. Make sure to choose a dog that tends to be independent if you are going to be gone for a lot of the day to help prevent potential behavior problems.
Are you familiar with the breeds potential health issues? Make sure to look up the dogs breed that you are interested in getting to be aware of any potential health issues. If the dogs breed is known to have a lot of issues ensure that you are able to create an emergency fund for your dog incase of any potential problems.
